Naomi Mitsuko Makkelie, a fine art alumna from HKU, intertwines past, present, and future in her artwork while exploring cultural interpretations. Influenced by traditional Japanese prints (Ukiyo-e) and (post-)Covid experiences, she integrates her works on paper with large canvas paintings, promoting diverse personal truths in art. Concerned about art’s stagnation, she advocates for innovation. In 2023, she received the Mondriaan Fund for Starting Artists and began her role as a Curator for Carwash Gallery in Utrecht. She won the Buning Brongers Prize in 2018.
