Hello, I’m Patricia Guarda, a Portuguese mixed media and textile artist, currently based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.
Fabric, with its ability to make instant connections to the natural world, our memories, culture and traditions, resonates deeply with me.
My artistic journey is a tactile exploration. By blending traditional and contemporary textile techniques, I create bridges between cultures and generations. This juxtaposition and overlap of techniques allows me to dive into textures and infuses my pieces with a unique sense of familiarity. I invite both the eyes and the fingertips to appreciate the intricacy of my work.
My creations, both 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional, are playful and delicate with pieces that resonate with an inner child through its shapes and colours, inviting whimsy and wonder. Yet, beneath the surface, they speak to the complexities of adulthood, often seasoned with witty and occasionally sarcastic humour. Each creation tells a story, a dialogue between heritage and novelty, a fusion that aims to blur the conventional boundaries between past and present.
Revealing the meticulous manual process as much as I can with its inherent imperfections is a clear intention in my work, contrasting with the precision of the digital era we live in.
